In a horrifying incident in South B, Starehe sub-county, Nairobi, a young woman named Mary Nanjala lost her life after being stabbed by a boda boda rider who had allegedly offered her a free ride. The shocking incident, which unfolded on a seemingly routine evening, has left the community in shock and heightened concerns about the safety of individuals, particularly women, using public transportation.
Makadara Assistant Police Commissioner Dennis Omuku provided details of the tragic event, stating that Mary Nanjala was in the company of her two friends when the boda boda rider approached them with an offer of a complimentary ride. However, the trio declined the offer, prompting the rider to follow them.
According to Omuku, Nanjala and her friends, feeling uneasy about the rider’s persistence, increased their pace in an attempt to distance themselves. Unfortunately, Nanjala did not manage to evade the rider, who caught up with her and allegedly made unwelcome advances. Despite her refusal, the situation escalated, leading to a violent and fatal outcome.
“The rider caught up with her and made further advances, but she maintained her stance. He then pulled out a knife, stabbed her in the thigh and chest, and took her mobile phone and money before fleeing,” explained Omuku.
Nanjala sustained critical injuries from the stabbing and was rushed to a nearby medical facility, where she succumbed to her wounds. The senseless act of violence has sparked outrage in the community and calls for increased security measures to protect the public, especially those using public transportation services.
Law enforcement authorities are actively investigating the incident, and efforts are underway to apprehend the boda boda rider responsible for the tragic assault and robbery. The case underscores the vulnerability of individuals, particularly women, to acts of violence and the urgent need for comprehensive measures to enhance public safety in the city.
