Three individuals, including a 20-year-old house help, are slated to face trial in May next year for their alleged involvement in an attempted robbery targeting a taxi driver. The suspects, Joy Mumbi (20), Kelvin Murithi (22), and Julius Njeru (25), are accused of threatening and attempting to steal a Toyota Ractis, valued at Sh1 million, from the taxi driver, Peter Gathesa.
The incident unfolded on November 19 along the superhighway in Nairobi. Gathesa sought refuge at the police station entrance after the suspects reportedly resorted to violence, including strangling him during the attempted robbery.
Details of the case suggest that the trio had used an online app to request a ride to State House Road. Mumbi occupied the co-driver’s seat, while Murithi and Njeru sat in the back. Along the journey, Murithi allegedly brandished a toy pistol, instructing Gathesa to stop the car.
The taxi driver managed to drive to the police station, where he sought assistance and led to the dramatic apprehension of the suspects by law enforcement.
Makadara Senior Principal Magistrate Gerald Mutiso released the suspects on a Sh500,000 bond. The case is scheduled for trial in May 2024.
